CALLISTO Receiver for e-CALLISTO Solar Spectrometer Network

The CALLISTO-NA (North America) Receiver is available in kit form or partially-built or ready-built and tested. The –NA version incorporates all engineering change requests (ECR) and remedies all non-conformance reports (NCR) through October 2011. The main differences between the North American and ETH versions are panel layout and the dc power input connector. The CALLISTO-NA Receiver is controlled by a user's PC running the supplied Windows application software. Spectral data are collected in the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) file format. On prior arrangement the data can be regularly sent to to ETH Zurich for use in the e-CALLISTO solar spectrometer network.

Production Runs

CALLISTO-NA Receivers in all versions are prepared in limited production runs using private time and effort.  We do not procure parts in large quantities, and we setup production runs to satisfy only current demand. Please take that into consideration when you place your order. If you would like to order the CALLISTO-NA Receiver in quantity, please contact us for a delivery schedule before ordering. 

Configurations Available for Ordering

The CALLISTO-NA Receiver Kit is Not Recommended as a first-time kit or for inexperienced builders so we offer partially-built and ready-built versions. The CALLISTO-NA Receiver Kit bill of material/parts list includes approximately 100 line items with a total component count of over 160 individual parts. There are 67 surface mount technology (SMT/SMD) components. Most SMT components are 0805 form factor (0.08 x 0.05 inches, 2.0 x 1.3 mm).

KIT: The kit (part number CR-KIT) requires soldering, coil winding, mechanical assembly and testing, but no drilling or cutting of the enclosure is required. All connections between the front and rear panels and the printed circuit board (PCB) are through connectorized cables, simplifying the installation and removal of the PCB.  Construction time including testing by an experienced builder is about 10~12 hours but will vary widely depending on builder's ability and attention to detail.

For builders reluctant to undertake the Kit project, we offer the CALLISTO-NA Receiver in the partially-built and ready-built configurations:

PARTIALLY-BUILT: The partially-built configuration (part number CR-PBT) includes all items in the Kit except that all PCB components are pre-installed and tested. All the builder has to do is build the internal cables and mount the connectors on the custom machined and labeled front/rear panels. Construction time is about 2~3 hours.

READY-BUILT: The ready-built configuration (part number CR-RBT) includes all items in the Kit except that all components are installed on the PCB and on the front/rear panels and the receiver is tested and ready for use. No hardware construction is required.

The CALLISTO-NA Receiver Kit includes

• Professionally manufactured printed circuit board (PCB), 2-sided, silkscreened
• Extruded aluminum enclosure with custom machined and labeled front/rear end panels
• Pre-programmed ATmega16-16PU microcontroller and 11 MHz clock crystal
• Philips Semiconductor CD1316LS/IV-3 front-end tuner
• Radio frequency, logic and logarithmic detector integrated circuits, sockets and components
• Voltage regulator integrated circuits
• Coil forms and coated magnet wire for IF transformers
• Semiconductors, resistors, capacitors, and protective devices
• Custom internal RF input cable
• Interface connectors and associated wiring components for RF input, focal plane unit, external clock, power input, video output and EIA-232 interface
• Hardware and fasteners
• CD with application software and construction and setup manuals (application software requires Windows 2000 or later)

Optional

• EIA-232 cable (DB-9F to DB-9M, straight-through wiring, shielded)
• USB-serial adapter
• AC adapter power supply, 115 Vac, 60 Hz input, regulated 12 vdc, 600 ma output (North America only)
• Tower-mounted low-noise preamplifier with bias-tee coupler for powering (future)

The CALLISTO-NA Receiver Kit DOES NOT include

• Antenna system
• Coaxial cable transmission line and associated RF connectors
• Antenna discharge unit (lightning protector)
