Jupiter Io-B on 09/10 January 2012

This was an afternoon pass (starting about1300 local time). We used two Icom R-75 HF Receivers, one tuned to 19.576 MHz (LSB), corresponding to the Red trace in the chart below, and the other tuned to 20.847 MHz (LSB), corresponding to the Green trace. The receivers were connected to the antenna through a multicoupler. The antenna was an 8-element log periodic antenna pointed about 90 degrees true (no tracking was used). The ambient RF noise level in this direction was about 420k K during the observation, depending on frequency.

The predicted activity included an Io-B enhanced storm from about 2250 on 9 January to 0045 on 10 January. We detected activity throughout most of the period. We observed mostly S-bursts, some of them quite strong. No audio recordings are available for this storm.

The Jupiter Radio Map is for reference and shows the orientation of the Io-B enhanced source at the observation time. All dates and times are UTC.

At the time of the chart below, Jupiter was at azimuth/elevation of approximately 105 degrees true and 20 degrees above the horizon.
